My mom asked me a couple of weeks ago if I might make her a few cards for the doctors and nursing staff that has been so good to her throughout the last few months. And she says because she would buy cards anyways, she would naturally pay me. Haha. Silly mom. I would be delighted to help you thank them.
I blogged about my initial reaction to my mom’s diagnosis here: http://daughter0fzion.wordpress.com/2011/03/03/no-one-ever-told-me-that-grief-felt-so-like-fear-c-s-lewis/. It has been about seven months since the first diagnosis. Seven months of major surgery, and chemo treatments… And tomorrow she goes in for her last round of chemo. Over and over my mom has told me she would not have traded this experience for anything.
We talked this afternoon about how she would continue with followup appointments, to make sure the cancer stays in remission. I suggested it’s hard to keep it in the foreground – and she disagreed. She does not want to ever be so far from this experience that she forgets how comforting the Lord has been. She does not want to forget how much even a simple card, or flowers, or sitting with someone through chemo days can mean. She does not want to take any of life for granted.
Mom, I am so very very grateful with you for the staff God has blessed you with, for the care you have received, for the support you have had throughout this journey. We are all be more appreciative of the breaths we take, and the memories we make because of the hard road you have been on. Soli Deo Gloria.
I’m actually tempted to get emotional on this one. Gavin Michael Booth – you have been one of the dearest friends to my family for over a decade now. We live hours away, and lead very busy lives, but have always managed to find time at least once or twice a year to get together. You’re the only thing (besides gyros) that I really miss about Windsor. You have been an inspiration to me, a faithful friend, and a creative mind to bounce ideas off of. I was so very glad we could do these cards up for you and your staff – especially glad to have got them to you in time for the Toronto International Film Festival. (side note – I’m still a touch giddy that Billy Boyd liked them)
Find Gavin here: http://www.youtube.com/mimeticonline, or here: http://twitter.com/#!/gavinbooth, or here: http://gavinnaked.com/, or even here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Gavin-Michael-Booth/104148993891. I’m sure I have missed a couple as well.
On to business cards. We went with a black 2ply rag board, and a silver ink. The design involved a hit on both sides, and three different names and sets of contact info. The end result is a soft sort of paper – clearly letterpress, on a thicker paper that is clearly memorable. Gavin (and Brendan, and Marie) – I can not wait to see what the coming years have in store for you!
My best friend brought her hooligans over for the afternoon. Not to be confused with the sort of friend who likes to sit around sipping tea and eating bon-bons, I invited Heather out to the garage to help me letterpress. I really wanted to reuse a lace plate I have fallen in love with when I created April’s invitations earlier this summer, and Heather chose a fantastic shade of pink to ink up the press with. I had no idea when I went back into my studio what I was going to do with all of the gloriously inked sheets of cotton paper I had now in my hands; so when Heather jokingly suggested making them into invites for her ten year old daughter’s birthday invitations, I jumped at the idea to play around with them.
I loved being able to combine satin ribbon, glitter (glow-in-the-dark no less!), stamping, and letterpress. Throw in corner rounding, hearts on the envelopes and I think we’ve created the ultimate ten year old invite. These are incredibly girly, but still stylish. Happy birthday Sarah!!
Gavin has proven to be the one person in Windsor I miss the most, and the only one Brad and I have stayed in touch with. We’ve managed to maintain a 10 year friendship with some very memorable visits back and forth. I was thrilled when he and Marie came up a couple of weeks ago to discuss business cards for Mimetic Entertainment. Gavin was gracious enough to put together a promo video for me, which is still in the works – but in the meantime, check out the How Many Days video that’s up on his YouTube channel – it’s a good peak at what we do….
This project was particularly exciting for me because it was the first time I have been asked to create a one-off design. Which means we ordered three plates, to only create one final piece – so very different than creating 160 invititations! You can see in the images how important it was for this bride to have her one year anniversary gift to her husband match their wedding invitations. She brought me an invite, and we color matched, and also used the same fonts and background. The end result was a beautiful version of their vows stylized after their invitations, to frame and treasure.
