I’m actually tempted to get emotional on this one.  Gavin Michael Booth – you have been one of the dearest friends to my family for over a decade now.  We live hours away, and lead very busy lives, but have always managed to find time at least once or twice a year to get together.  You’re the only thing (besides gyros) that I really miss about Windsor.  You have been an inspiration to me, a faithful friend, and a creative mind to bounce ideas off of.  I was so very glad we could do these cards up for you and your staff – especially glad to have got them to you in time for the Toronto International Film Festival. (side note – I’m still a touch giddy that Billy Boyd liked them)

Find Gavin here: http://www.youtube.com/mimeticonline, or here: http://twitter.com/#!/gavinbooth, or here: http://gavinnaked.com/, or even here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Gavin-Michael-Booth/104148993891.  I’m sure I have missed a couple as well.

On to business cards.  We went with a black 2ply rag board, and a silver ink.  The design involved a hit on both sides, and three different names and sets of contact info.  The end result is a soft sort of paper – clearly letterpress, on a thicker paper that is clearly memorable.  Gavin (and Brendan, and Marie) – I can not wait to see what the coming years have in store for you!

I LOVE working with other vendors in the wedding industry. So, when Ryan asked me to design invitations for his open house, it was an easy yes. So was creating menus, place cards and table numbers for the table mock ups he had. Ryan’s work is always classy, sophisticated, and specific to each client.

My favourite concept was creating the candle place cards. A shout out to Brent Foster whose name I borrowed – another great talent in the local industry! The exceptionally beautiful cake, and delicious cupcakes were created by Amy of Bake Me a Cake - so, so tasty!!

The idea of working for other professionals does not get old.  I was thrilled when Jeremy of Photobox Photography in London contacted me to create letterpress DVD covers for their discs that they give to clients.  We knew we were going to go with a blind hit, but instead of just going without ink, I used a touch of our tint base to create a watermark impression.  The end result is quite perfect…

Now that Christmas is over, I can finally blog what has been one of my favourite projects to date – creating custom stationery for all the girls in my family, and my best friend Heather. It was a lot of fun choosing fonts to suit each of the women, and it was awesome seeing their reactions. I am eager to keep creating these – we live in a highly customized society – where everything is tailored to one’s individual taste. I especially love that I can offer something to people who don’t get usually get to buy something with their own names on them – the Laurel’s of the world…

Consider as a bride giving out a fabulous package of stationery to each of your bridesmaids – something that reflects your appreciation of them, perhaps in the colour of your wedding. You pick a font that reflects their whimsical, or romantic side, and they all have something that is unique to each of them.

Perhaps you are a professional, and you want that extra special touch when you engage with your clients. I had a lot of fun designing this custom letterhead for Jer Wilcocks – one of the most humble and down-to-earth photographers I have met. But you can only quote Ron Burgundy from Anchor Man so many times before it becomes custom letterpress worthy….

Maryanne, who owns the incredibly chic Elegance Bridal in Sarnia, and is also an amazing wedding planner, approached me for letterpress business cards. We played around with a few ideas, and asked my graphic designer Rey for some layout ideas. He quickly and competently whipped up a few choices, and the end result is a streamlined business card that conveys all of the areas that Elegance can help brides with their big day.

I LOVE letterpress. The struggle that goes with creating a good make ready… The satisfaction when I finally get it right. The ink that stays on my arm for days… mixing colors, feeding the paper, the smells…. it’s all an ethereal experience for me. It makes me want to get right back in there….
